Why and where is my pool leaking?

This is a question that can have countless combinations of answers, but I will go through a few. If there is an issue with the equipment and you see a leak on the pressure side of the pump and/or the filter then that can be an issue with PVC contracting and expanding from temperature and direct sunlight overtime. This can cause glue to crack and pressure to push a leak through at those joints. A suction leak will usually be evident by air bubbles blowing back into the pool, which is an indication of a leak coming from the suction side, going into the motor and can often times be the adapter or union directly in front of the intake of the motor.

Where is the leak in your pool? We’ll start with a very simple explanation and that is that the leak will stop where the leak is at. If you fill a cup up with water and poke a hole in the center of it, it will leak until the water reaches the center of the cup. Usually, when you see a leak, it will go down to where it is. If you don’t see any leaks on the side with the equipment, but the water drains all the way down to the light, then that is going to be where your leak is at. If it drains down to the bottom of the tile or the skimmer, That’ll be the indication of the level of your leak.

During times of high use, it is acceptable to say that a great deal of water can simply be splashed out from jumping in and getting out of the pool. Evaporation is always a factor as well. Sometimes there is a leak under the deck which requires special equipment to hear the leak and the deck to be cut up for the PVC repair. Those leak detection and repairs can be very time-consuming and costly, if it’s something simple like a leak in one of the returns a simple putty can be used to patch the leak.

It’s also worth mentioning that once one leak is fixed another one can spring up directly after.

The problem with not fixing a leak in your pool is obviously a high water cost, but also can cause a lack of sanitation and stability in water chemistry. So make sure that if you believe that your pool is leaking, to get a hold of a leak detection specialist who promotes themselves as such.
