Can I acid wash the surface of my pool?
My pump is making a loud noise!
A noisy pump motor is something that does happen shortly before the motor burns out. There are a few things that can cause this, but the resolve is going to be the same, which is to replace the motor. Sometimes we can have bad weather causing an acceleration of the motor to go bad. Sometimes you can have a leaking shaft seal, which can be caused by several different issues also including poor water chemistry. There can also be an air leak due to low water in the pool that can cause wear on the motor.
Ultimately, the main cause is going to be age permitting any of these things to be an issue. Bad weather can be as simple as a lot of lightning in the area and just like your electricity would go out that simple jolt is enough to either put tear on a motor or entirely burned up. Sometimes you’ll notice in those timelines. You will hear it get loud and put off a grinding sound. This means it’s time to replace the motor.
If there is a leaking shaft seal, this will enable water to get on the shaft of the motor, causing rust and corrosion, accelerating the deterioration of your motor. Sometimes it’s as simple as replacing the shaft seal. Other times replacing the seal can accelerate losing the motor, depending on how quick you see the issue. In this case, you would always see a puddle of water underneath the pump, indicating that the shaft seal is leaking the best thing to do at that point is to simply replace the motor
If the water in the pool is constantly low due to a leak, causing the pump to pull air and lose prime, this will add wear and tear on your motor. The simple answer is if you have a valve to shut off the skimmer to simply shut off the skimmeruntil the leak can be located and repaired in this particular case not fixing the leak is a moot point. Until the leak can be located and repaired in this particular case not fixing the leak is a moot point to replace your motor. If you replace it and don’t fix the leak, you will just go through another motor. In this case, you would want to replace the motor after fixing the leak and it’s entirety.
These are some possibilities, but not the entirety of any problem that can arise. If you have any questions, please feel free to call.
